Recreation and attractions
Camping is available at different parks located in the forest and within easy driving distance from Mountainair. Numerous hiking, horseback riding, cross country skiing, and mountain biking opportunites exist nearby. The area's favorable climate conditions make outdoor receation possible year-round.

The Salinas National Monument Visitor Center is located in Mountainair and has information on the three Missions and Tewa Indian pueblos located within 25 miles of Mountainair.

The closest airport and big city is Albuquerque, New Mexico which is about an hour's drive. WalMart and other shopping is located in Belen, about 35 minutes away.

East of Mountainair lies the Estancia Basin and Valley. Major industries in this area include farming and ranching. Most horse owners get their alfalfa in this area.
