Mountainair New Mexico’s Premier Local Events and Festivals
Sunflower Folk Art Day
When it's sunflower time again throughout the Estancia Valley, Mountainair comes alive with Sunflower Folk ART Day in celebration of this annual floral visitor which adorns the countryside. The town's annual late-summer event is scheduled a Saturday every August.
The area around the Dr. Saul Community Center comes alive as dozens of other folk artists and craftspeople from around New Mexico show and sell their work to a background of guitar music. Dozens of artists from the Santa Fe Spanish Market also display their work. There’s also a Chili cook-off with two categories, both Red Chili and Green Chili which takes place around lunch which is always a crowd favorite. The Sunflower Hat Contest is also a crowd favorite as locals create elaborate head gear festooned with this wild blossoming, native flower..
Poets and Writers Picnic
The gazebo and lawn adjacent the Historic Schaeffer Hotel is the location for the annual Mountainair Poets and Writers Picnic … come hear the spoken word as poets and writers from all over the state convene for the annual August pilgrimage to Mountainair, New Mexico for a day of spoken word under the tall trees shading the Gazebo in the Schaeffer garden. For those looking to improve their craft, The Sunflower Writing Workshop also takes place this weekend.
Firecracker Jubilee
Mountainair always gets an early jump on celebrating our nation’s birthday with their Annual Firecracker Jubilee. This is Mountainair’s longest standing having been celebrated for more than 35 years. This one is fun for the whole family with a free dance at the community center, a pancake breakfast sponsored by the Rotary Club at the city park and an annual parade which winds itself through town. More than 50 parade entries compete for trophies with the streets lined with eager parade watchers ... can you say Norman Rockwell.
